A Westchester firefighter is in the hospital after suffering a medical emergency following a response to a house fire in Port Chester Monday night.

Fire officials said crews were called around 5:30 p.m. at a home on Austin Place after reports of the smell of gas inside.

When firefighters entered the basement, they found heavy smoke and a fire burning within the walls.

Crews worked quickly to knock the fire down, the department said.

After the fire was extinguished, one firefighter suffered a medical emergency.

He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Fire officials said the firefighter is doing well.

It was not immediately clear whether the medical emergency was related to the incident.
