Accusations of sign stealing have emerged ahead of a special election for Yorktown town supervisor.
Democrat Jann Mirchandani released a picture on her campaign website allegedly showing a town code enforcement officer taking a sign off her property. Mirchandani later retrieved the sign, along with five more, using a GPS tracking device. She has filed a police report regarding the incident.
Deputy Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman stated that he was informed the sign was on town property. He said that some of his signs have also been removed for the same reason.
Lachterman and Mirchandani are set to compete head-to-head in next week's elections to fill out the term of the late Thomas Diana.
The Yorktown Town Attorney Adam Rodriguez has released a statement saying: A complaint was made recently by a member of the public to the Yorktown Police Department, alleging that a Town employee improperly removed political opinion signs from private property. I have been in communication with the Police Department regarding this matter. I can report that the Police Department expects to close its investigation tonight or tomorrow, and that it appears that the Town employee was properly performing his job by removing signs from Town property.
