Police in Mount Vernon are investigating two separate shootings, one of them deadly, that happened Sunday night.
The first shots rang out around 6 p.m. yesterday along East Third Street. Police say Charles Smith, 42, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he died.
Acting Police Commissioner Ron Fatigate says the victim may have been targeted. "The Mount Vernon Police Department is working around the clock to bring the individual or individuals responsible to justice. At this time, information gathered strongly indicates that this was not a random act of violence."
Approximately one hour later, another person was shot in the leg outside Levister Towers and sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Investigators are working to figure out if the incidents are related.
Mayor Richard Thomas vows to stop the violence in the city. "Those who choose to engage in a life of crime will not run our streets. We are dedicated to strengthening public safety and look forward to developing a coalition of law enforcement and non-profit agencies to assist in the effort to create a safer Mount Vernon."
