A quiet lakefront road in Mamakating turned into a sea of police lights the day after Christmas when state police say someone in the neighborhood was fatally shot.
News 12 was on the scene of the developing incident Thursday morning on Yankee Lake Road as Sullivan County sheriff’s deputies joined dozens of police vehicles.
A neighbor who asked not to be identified says she heard frightening sounds from someone upset in a house nearby shortly before authorities arrived.
“I heard screams. The one who was screaming was saying my life is over,” the neighbor said.
News 12 later saw a man surrounded by police and being consoled by several other people.
State police say the victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds and is dead following a "suspicious incident."
Police blocked the road to traffic near Sunset Point and turned motorists away for hours during the investigation.
Neighbors say the law enforcement activity is worrisome.
“You think you’re safe up here. I left Brooklyn for this,” neighbor Charlie Burke said.
State police say the incident does not pose a danger to the public.
