Quick thinking on the part of an Orange County sheriff's deputy saved the life of another county employee who suffered a heart attack.
Orange County Real Property Director John McCarey suffered a heart attack in the waiting room of the county executive's office in April.
heriff's Deputy Andrew Eberhardt is assigned to protect the county executive’s office, and on that day, duty called.
The 30-year department veteran immediately checked McCarey for a pulse. When he didn't find one, Eberhardt began CPR and directed county staff to grab a nearby defibrillator – which ultimately, restarted McCarey's heart.
McCarey says he's now fine after undergoing surgery and getting a pacemaker. He is planning on retiring next month.
Deputy Eberhardt was recently recognized by the county Legislature for his lifesaving actions.
