A series of violations have been issued to a landlord in Rockland County following a News 12 report earlier this month.
As News 12 previously reported, a Piermont tenant citied safety concerns about stairs that had yet to be fixed after damage from last season's hurricanes. The damage was impeding her efforts to move out.
Now, the Rockland Health Department stepped in.
Brian Welty is one of the county Health Department inspectors that found violations at 51 Kinney Place, ultimately putting the landlords on notice.
“We think that landlords enter a contract with tenants, not just tenants with landlords. Once you’re doing this transaction, paying rent, you should expect that things are taken care of," he says.
After a closer look, inspectors found a handful of other problems inside.
The tenant, Jeannie McCann, reached out to the county and showed them News 12's report after her attempts with Piermont village officials were unsuccessful.
“It was a huge relief that somebody came right away, saw the problem, cited the problem, as one would hope anybody would have done, but yet the shocking thing is no one did it until they came," she says.
McCann tells us she’s moving out soon, as long as it stays dry, because the stairs inside leads to puddles when it rains.
The evidence of flooding and water damage is another violation.
The homeowners had no comment for News 12 when called.
News 12 was told that the landlords have until next week to fix these issues or present a plan to the Health Department on when everything will be addressed.
Otherwise, this could head to court and the landlords could face fines.
News 12 reached out to Piermont village officials for comment but have not yet heard back.
