The race for the 35th Senate District took another nasty turn Saturday after incumbent state Senator Nick Spano (R-Yonkers) accused Democratic challenger Andrea Stewart-Cousins of being directly responsible for vandalism to his signs.
Spano?s giant campaign billboard on Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers had Bush?s name spray painted next to his. Spano alleges that the vandalism that took place Friday night was conducted by Democratic campaign workers from Brooklyn. He says they were shipped in not only to deface his sign, but to rip down others.
Stewart-Cousins denies the accusations. She says without proof she can?t answer allegations of people who are suspicious of her campaign workers being driven in to deface signs. Stewart-Cousins says her signs have been vandalized and torn down too.
Yonkers police say they stopped some people putting up Spano/Bush signs Friday night who said they worked for the Democratic Party. Police say they were issued a summons and were told to remove them.
