Sen. Charles Schumer visited Highland Falls Elementary School Friday in Orange County, where proposed federal spending cuts could have a large impact on the district.

The Trump administration's proposed 2020 federal budget looms over the district with the potential for serious cuts to staff and programs.

The district relies heavily on "impact aid" or federal funds given to schools in primarily untaxable military areas. President Donald Trump's budget calls for $69 million in cuts to the program which Highland Falls Superintendent Dr. Frank Sheboy says would be “devastating” since only 7 percent of the district's land is taxable.

"Without impact aid, we'd lose $3.4 million in our revenue," says Dr. Sheboy.

Sen. Schumer said he would do all he could to get the school “fully funded.”

The district has roughly 1,000 students, many of them from military families. School administrators say without the money, they would have no choice but to make cuts because of the tax cap.

Lawmakers have until Oct. 1 to pass a spending plan or else face the possibility of another government shutdown.
