A shelved railway project that would give Orange and Rockland commuters a one-stop ride to New York City is once again picking up steam.

Sen. Charles Schumer said Wednesday that the "Amtrak Gateway Project" would make commuters' lives easier while upgrading aging, storm-damaged infrastructure.

Orange County and Rockland County commuters would be able buy one ticket to travel from Middletown to Manhattan.

Despite the benefits, a similar project was scrapped once before. However, leaders and commuters said it's worth another shot if this time the federal government can pick up most of the estimated $20 billion price tag.

The proposed railway tunnel would also connect travelers from Secaucus, New Jersey directly to Penn Station in Manhattan.
