(AP) -- Sen. Charles Schumer says the U.S. needs a better system of tracking cases of sudden death among young children.
Schumer is calling on the Senate to pass legislation intended to fill gaps in federal reporting of infant and child deaths.
The bipartisan legislation has already passed the House of Representatives.
Schumer says it will promote awareness about unexpected child deaths. He says it also will provide for better data collection related to stillbirths and sudden deaths in infants and young children.
Schumer spoke Wednesday at a Long Island hospital where he was joined by parents who have lost children.
Greg Spina said the bill is "of the utmost importance."
Spina's son, Ethan, died in February 2013 at the age of 2.
