Scarsdale's St. James the Less parish celebrates 175th anniversary

The Parish of St. James the Less marked a significant milestone this weekend, celebrating its 175th year.
In 1849, William Popham, one of Scarsdale's founding fathers, leased the land for the church grounds and graveyard to the parish for a silver dime.
The original building was constructed in 1851.
Many Scarsdale street names, such as Popham, Crane, Morris, and Heathcote, are named after early church members or founders.
To commemorate the anniversary, descendants of the church's founders gathered from across the country.
"The descendants of our founders came from abroad and all over the country to celebrate with us and get us going on what's gonna be a really great year," said a parish representative.
Last year, St. James the Less raised $3 million through donations and grants to enhance its grounds and facilities.
