Salisbury Mills, a small hamlet in Orange County, has a whole lot to explore on this week’s Road Trip: Close to Home.

Strap on those hiking shoes because we’re hitting the trails of Schenemunk Mountain, the highest mountain in Orange County!

This state park has well over 3,000 acres of rolling meadows and breathtaking views. As you walk up the hills along grassy trails, you can’t miss this major landmark - the Moodna Viaduct.

“Right now it’s the longest active railroad trestle East of the Mississippi,” says historian Bob McCue.

The 3,200-foot-long trestle has been used as a freight line since the early 1900s. It stands more than 190 feet high. And today, more than a century later, both freight and commuter trains continue to chug along the track. “There’s just something beautiful about a bridge you just look at the steel against the mountain, it’s almost like artistry,” says McCue.

While there’s so much history to dive into around here - our next stop has a sweet twist. Family owned Weir’s Ice Cream has been a staple in Salisbury Mills for 65 years.
