A mother who lost her daughter in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting spoke in Rockland County on Friday to honor her child and advocate for stronger school safety measures, organizers said.

The seminar, hosted by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, featured Michelle Gay, the mother of 7-year-old Joey Gay, one of 20 students and six adults killed by a gunman in the Connecticut tragedy.

She emphasized the urgent need for enhanced school safety measures in the region and nationwide.

“For me it’s personal, it’s my daughter’s legacy,” Gay said. “I feel very strongly that this is what she would have wanted me to do with the time I have on this earth to turn my pain into purpose.”

The event aimed to raise awareness and inspire action on school safety, more than 12 years after the devastating shooting.
