Residents and local businesses came together at Rye Playland Saturday night to fund research, raise awareness and to one day, find a cure for cancer.

Hundreds carried lanterns for the annual "Light the Night" walk.

The white lanterns signified survivors and hope, while gold was carried by those who walked in memory of loved ones they lost.

Red lanterns were proudly carried by supporters.

Melissa Martinez, who lost her father to cancer, said it was hard on the family to lose her father, but she added that her support of others is vital in their journey to find healing.

The event was all about lighting the path to cures and spreading the message that there is much to be done when it comes to research and treatment in the fight against all cancers.

Beth Zelin, of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said they hope to raise $750,000 this year that will go to research and families in need.

The "Remembrance Pavillion" was a especially touching focal point where people wrote and posted heartfelt messages to those they've lost.

Victoria Assumma, who works at the White Plains Hospital, said it's powerful because it brings family together to share memories of those they lost.

With News 12's Angelica Toruno serving as announcer for the event, survivors, supporters and family members shared their personal battles against the disease.

While most said they will continue to fight on, there is the hope that one day cancer will be eradicated completely.

Oncology nurse Karen Wright said the event also served as an opportunity to educate people on early screening and detection to optimize positive outcomes.
