Families returned to the historic Rye Playland amusement park Saturday for a soft opening ahead of next weekend’s full grand opening to give visitors an early look at the beloved Westchester County destination.
The park’s iconic Dragon Coaster, however, is not open yet.
The historic ride, which has undergone major repairs in recent years, is expected to reopen for the park’s grand opening next Saturday, May 23.
Still, there was excitement in the air as the new season got underway.
“There’s nothing soft about this launch,” said Westchester Parks Commissioner Kathleen O’Connor. “You can feel it.”
After a year of uncertainty and ongoing construction, county officials say the park is ready to welcome families back. O’Connor called Playland “the jewel of the county” and said officials want it to be “a pleasurable, wonderful experience for everybody that comes.”
Jonathan, a Westchester County resident who was visiting with his children, said returning brought back memories.
“I came here as a kid all the time, so it was exciting to get first dibs,” he said.
Playland, which first opened in 1928, remains one of Westchester’s signature summer traditions.
County officials are expected to attend next weekend’s full grand opening.
