A series of serious crashes on Route 6 in Woodbury over two days sent more than a dozen people to hospitals, including one who was airlifted, according to fire officials.
The latest incident happened Monday morning when an SUV went over a guardrail and plunged approximately 50 feet down an embankment, landing on its roof.
The Woodbury Fire Department says firefighters rescued the driver from the overturned vehicle and brought the person back up the steep embankment. The driver was taken to a hospital. Their condition was not immediately available.
Just a day earlier, on Sunday, a multi-vehicle pileup left several people injured.
The Woodbury fire chief told News 12 that an initial crash was followed by a secondary collision when other motorists struck vehicles from the first accident that were sitting in the middle of the roadway with their lights off.
According to the chief, at least 12 people were transported to hospitals following Sunday’s crashes, including one person who was airlifted.
The stretch of Route 6 has been the scene of numerous serious crashes over the years. News 12 previously reported on the roadway’s history of accidents and safety concerns.
News 12 has reached out to New York State Police for additional information about the crashes.
