A serious crash on Route 206 early Sunday morning triggered a major emergency response and left one person trapped inside a vehicle before being flown to a trauma center.
The Sussex County 911 Center received multiple calls around 6:40 a.m. reporting a collision at the intersection of Route 206 and the entrance to the Walmart.
Fire and rescue crews from Newton, Stillwater, Fredon and Hampton were dispatched and confirmed that one occupant was pinned inside one of the vehicles. Newton Squad 3, the first rescue unit on scene, led the extrication efforts.
While crews worked to free the trapped occupant, Hampton Fire units established a helicopter landing zone in the upper field of the Walmart parking lot.Once freed, the victim was treated at the scene and then airlifted to a regional trauma center.
A second person involved in the crash was taken to a medical center for evaluation.
Emergency crews operated at the scene for about an hour before clearing the roadway.
The New Jersey State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
