Since Sept. 2023, Rockland County Consumer Protection says they have 15 open cases involving residents that total more than $200,000 for contractor work that either wasn't started or wasn’t finished.
The agency says the number of cases is more than it typically sees.
“The best thing to do is to reach out to my department to ensure that [contractors] are actually licensed in Rockland County,” said Kimberly Von Ronn, the Director of Consumer Protection.
News 12 spoke with a Stony Point homeowner who paid Ace Roofing & Masonry a $9,000 deposit earlier this year to do work on the roof and front entrance. She told News 12 that the man seemed legit after meeting in person and checking out his website. He ended up not showing up.
"What I really want to say to this guy, I don't want it to be on camera,” she said in an interview, not revealing her identity. "I want him to give me my money back, and I want him to go to jail for what he did."
He was not licensed in the county and officials are still working to contact him.
"We have not heard of this particular company and that is typical,” said Von Ronn. “They keep changing their name so we can't track them down."
Consumer Protection sent News 12 photos of another unlicensed contractor doing drainage work at a home in Pomona.
"They promise you things and don’t come through with what they were promising you,” said the homeowner in an interview.
She had paid “RAIN KING” $10,000. Consumer protection was able to get her $6,500 back.
Under a county law, Consumer Protection can also impound vehicles and take equipment from unlicensed contractors. They also work with local law enforcement agencies to hold these people accountable by issuing violations.
Both businesses were not available for comment. As one voicemail was full, and the other number could not accept calls.
