A Rockland man is facing charges this afternoon for allegedly trying to bribe members of the NYPD to obtain gun permits for people who otherwise would not qualify.
Federal officials say Alex Lichtenstein, 44, of Pomona, used his connections within the police department to secure 150 gun licenses. They allege he would then resell those permits to customers in Brooklyn.
Lichtenstein was arrested at his home in Pomona this weekend after police say a sting operation recorded him bragging about his gun sales to the undercover cop.
He is charged with bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery. The complaint said Lichtenstein, also known as Shaya, is a member of the Shomrim in Borough Park, Brooklyn. Shomrim is a volunteer, ostensibly unarmed Orthodox Jewish Patrol society whose mission includes combatting criminal activity and locating missing people.
