Lawmakers in Rockland County have voted to override all of County Executive Ed Day's budget item vetoes in the 2015 spending plan.
After months of battling it out with the county executive, the Rockland legislature voted 15-2 to restore cuts to the sheriff's department and the non-profit sector.
Last week, Day used his line-item veto power to reduce the budget adopted by the legislature by more than $700,000. It was a move that Sheriff Lou Falco says would have compromised public safety. "The public is going to be more at rest, my officers jobs are secure, but the public will be safe," says Falco.
In a statement, Day defended his cuts to News 12. "I could not in good conscience sign a budget that continues the county down the road to financial decline, including the risk of another default. The failure of the legislature to even consider debate on the specific budget items smacks of legislative cowardice."
Falco says he hopes at the beginning of the year to sit down with Day and mend some fences, regroup, and hopefully work toward making the process of the 2016 budget smoother.
