Rockland County's Health Department is cracking down on housing violations, and demanding that slumlords clean up their acts.
The crackdown is part of what the county calls the Rockland Codes Initiative, which targets illegal and overcrowded housing in the county.
Rockland County Public Health Technician Brian Welty found 15 carbon monoxide violations in an apartment building he inspected in Spring Valley.
"We see a lot of dangerous conditions," he says.
The goal of the initiative is to use the broad power of the Health Department to improve conditions. The penalty for violations of the sanitary code is $2,000 a day.
Since the initiative began at the end of April, the number of complaints to the Health Department about housing violations has doubled.
