A Rockland County school board member has resigned amid controversy over her reaction to a social media post about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Dawn Kitz, a South Orangetown Central School District board member, faced backlash after responding with a laughing emoji to the violent post.

Kitz stepped down following outrage from parents within the district.

In a Facebook post, Kitz said, "The real loss here is for the students."
