Rockland County Executive Ed Day declared a state of emergency Monday afternoon.

Day says hoarding is a concern so there is a limit on what people can buy at their local grocery stores. This includes hand sanitizer, toilet paper, meat and frozen foods. Consumers can buy just two units per household per day.

Day say Consumer Protection will start enforcing those rules at local businesses starting Tuesday.

Day said starting on Tuesday, all public schools will close for two weeks. Private schools, colleges and yeshivas were given an extra day, and their closures will begin on Wednesday.

The county also issued a stay-home order for people who have been tested for the coronavirus and are waiting results. He says a violation of this order would be considered a Class B misdemeanor carrying a sentence of up to three months in jail or one year probation and fines.An order was also placed to restrict buffet and salad bars - food can now only be sold in individual containers.

Day also talked about plans to create a drive-through testing facility like the one in New Rochelle. He says the state is considering using Anthony Wayne Park, and it could be set up as soon as next weekThe earliest the schools could open in the county is March 31, but the county could extend the closures at the request of school districts.
