Rockland County broke ground on a brand-new animal shelter in Pomona Thursday.
Hi-Tor Animal Care Center's existing building is old, outdated and so small that the shelter has turned temporary trailers into storage areas and offices.
The new building will be more than triple the size - from 4,000 to 14,000 square feet.
It will be constructed behind the old building, which will then be torn down and turned into a parking lot.
"My favorite quote is, 'You try to see the love through the cracks.' So our building is less than we would like it to be, but we try to make the best of it," said Hi-Tor Animal Care Center kennel assistant manager Rebecca Cziborra.
The project is now out for bidding with plans to start construction next spring.
