Montefiore Medical Center doctors are using robotics to stay on the cutting edge of gynecological surgery.
Surgeon Dennis Yi-Shin Kuo recently guided robotic arms to perform a hysterectomy on a 76-year-old cancer patient. Doctors say robotic surgery reduces recovery time and time in the operating room. Experts are also encouraged by a reduction in complications and bleeding, making robotic procedures ideal for diabetic patients.
Surgeons are still adjusting to the new technology, which arrived at the Bronx hospital last summer. Montefiore plans to allow robotic ear, nose and throat surgeries in the near future.
