Road Trip: Sip cider at Hogan's Cider Mill in Burlington

Well. It is Apple season and that also means cider season. And this week's road trip close to home news 12 photo journalist Laurie Elias takes us to Burlington where they have been pressing cider the old fashioned way for 110 years. The history of hard cider goes back in this part of the world to the first european settlers. This is Hogan cider mill in Burlington Connecticut. It's been a cider mill since 1912. So my parents bought the cider mill in the early nineties and now my husband and I are kind of the next generation Ciders history in New England really goes back quite some time in colonial times. The average person, men, women and Children drink about 50 gallons a year of hard cider. It was very much a part of New England life. I think that people are really starting to rediscover cider and it's exciting here because we do so many different varieties. I mean we make hard ciders that are fairly dry, which is probably the most historically accurate hard cider. So I'm going to be making a Hogan's drunken doughnut for you. Our bar is not only serve adult beverages with our hard cider. So the first thing I'm gonna put in here is our december frost hard cider. Now the next step is we topped with a cider doughnut, we add some whipped cream to the top and then we have our Hogan's harvest sprinkles voila. We have boost free options as well. Sweet cider slushies which are delicious and then our delightful doughnut drink which is a version of the Hogan's drunken doughnut without alcohol. So it's been a cider mill since 1912. Mr Hogan had always brought his apples in from other places and that worried us when we first started now, we have planted some of our own trees with heirloom varieties of apples as well and we're excited to start using those in our cider production. Yeah, if you walk in and you hear some loud grinding going on, that means you know, we have some fresh pressed cider being made and really the whole building just fills up with that nice smell of sweet apples and really you can't beat it. We very much focused on being family friendly. We have mini golf for the parents and kids to play together. We have cornhole games out there and it's just such a beautiful setting that people come here ready to relax and enjoy themselves. They should come just to not only sample a part of history, but try some of our new exciting drinks as well. The whole atmosphere here at Hogan's really sums up fall, not only do you have the beautiful red truck covered in pumpkins out front, the delicious drinks, but it's just a relaxing place for families to come and just really enjoy themselves and take in the beautiful new England foliage. All right now I'm in the mood for fall after seeing all those pumpkins and apples. Hogan's drunken donut actually recently went viral on Tiktok with over a million views and they have it right there.
