Sightseeing is getting a whole new perspective at Westchester County Airport, where helicopter tours are giving riders a bird’s‑eye view of the Hudson Valley and beyond.
This week’s Road Trip: Close to Home takes us to Wings Air Helicopters, where visitors can soar above familiar landmarks and see the region from the sky.
“People love it,” said Anna Macsai, general manager of Wings Air Helicopter. “They take pictures and they’re just enjoying the sights the entire time.”
Macsai says the company began as a small flight school with just one helicopter and has since grown, now offering tours and instruction at multiple locations, including White Plains.
Some of the helicopters can carry up to six passengers in addition to the pilot.
Pilot Ryan Culpepper says the tours offer views most people rarely get to experience.
“We offer 30‑minute or 45‑minute tours,” Culpepper said. “On the longer tours, you’ll see Yankee Stadium, the Brooklyn Bridge, Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.”
Culpepper says night flights are especially popular, noting the city’s skyline looks different after dark. Other tours head north along the Hudson River, particularly during the fall foliage season.
The flights have also become a popular backdrop for special occasions, including birthdays and marriage proposals.
In addition to sightseeing, Wings Air Helicopters also operates a flight school for those interested in becoming pilots.
“We can take you from your private pilot license all the way to commercial, and even help you become a certified flight instructor,” Culpepper said.
Whether it’s a first flight or a bucket‑list adventure, pilots say the experience leaves a lasting impression.
“It’s definitely a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience,” Culpepper said.
