One day, five-time World Boxing Champion Iran Barkley was dominating in the ring. Before long, he found himself sleeping on the subway in the Bronx.
The group Ring 10 New York helped put his life back together.
The organization says that broken boxers are common because they do not have the benefit of a union in their corner.
Members like Stefani Belloise help the former fighters get off the ropes by holding fundraisers for expensive surgeries and day-to-day needs like groceries.
Belloise says she grew up watching her father, the former champion and Bronx resident Steve Belloise, go through the same struggles.
In addition to raising money, the group has created a support network for former fighters.
Organizers say last year, they raised about $14,000 and hope to make more in 2014.
