Residents could finally be seeing some relief at the pump as gas prices begin to fall.
With the start of fall, refineries are switching to a cheaper, winter mix of gasoline, and demand has dropped as the summer travel season ends.
According to a recent report from AAA, regular gas costs on average just over $3.34 a gallon across the country, down about nine cents over last year.
Experts say there's also a glut of gasoline in the U.S., thanks to fracking - the controversial process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas and oil.
A check of regular gasoline prices in the Hudson Valley shows prices in Yonkers ranging from $3.49 to $3.95 a gallon. In White Plains, prices ranged from $3.45 to $3.89 a gallon. In Mount Vernon, prices ranged from $3.43 to $3.99 a gallon.
Experts say the lower gas prices could go up again if oil-producing nations cut production.
