Residents at Nyack Plaza apartments receive help from Red Cross following fire

News 12 is hearing from the people impacted by a fire at the Nyack Plaza apartment building, as well as from officials investigating the blaze.

The American Red Cross was set up inside the Nyack Senior Center on Wednesday to help those impacted. The organization says it is now helping 29 adults and eight kids from 13 families.
The Red Cross wants any residents impacted by the fire who have not contacted them already to give them a call at 1-877-Red Cross (877-733-2767) and select option 1.
Meanwhile, the United Way of Rockland and Rockland's Department of Social Services worked alongside the Red Cross on Wednesday to fill in any gaps for care.

Tyler Hammond, a displaced resident, says he still has many questions about what he and his family will do next. Hammon spent the day with his family taking things out of his unit, which he says has small amounts of water damage.
He says his family and other neighbors are currently in a local hotel for the next few days.
"We don't know. Everything is uncertain. They don't know. So, it's just like, what happens now," said Hammond. "Everything is just very stressful."
Meanwhile, there is some good news emerging too. Katina Crowder says her family's cat, L.B., was found safe inside their unit after he was unaccounted for during the fire.
“Our family is complete again,” Crowder said, with a smile.
She also learned that her family's apartment has two holes in the ceiling but no other damage. She says they may be able to return quicker than they originally thought.
At the time of this report, a GoFundMe started by the Nyack NAACP has raised more than $62,000 from more than 500 donations since Tuesday.
