A Republican senator blocked an attempt to pass an extension of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

Sen. Rand Paul voted against the extension of the fund, which is meant to offer medical care and help to 9/11 first responders.

“Any new spending that we are approaching, any new program that's going to have the longevity of 70, 80 years should be offset by cutting spending that's less valuable. We need at the very least have this debate,” Paul said. 

The move brought backlash from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand who was for the extension.

“Do we care about the men and women who answered the call of duty?” Gillibrand said.

Rep. Peter King also responded to the Republican lawmaker.

“We have to make sure this bill goes through.  It's required as a matter of justice,” King said.
