The flu season is in full swing, and New York is already getting hit hard.
Officials are reporting an increase in the flu in every corner of the state. Last week, cases of influenza rose by 72 percent, with new cases in 58 out of 62 counties. Westchester is one of the counties with the highest increase in the number of flu cases.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging people 6 months and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during last year's flu season, about 80 percent of flu-related deaths occurred in kids who were not vaccinated.
The highest flu-related hospitalization rate is in kids who are under 5 years old.
The CDC says it takes about two weeks after getting vaccinated for antibodies to develop to provide protection against the flu.
Officials are reminding people that it is never too late to get the shot, as flu activity usually peaks in February and can last until May.
