A new report released by the Food Bank for New York City shows a dire need for donated food.
About 20 percent of New Yorkers rely on the Food Bank for New York, according to the new State of Hunger report released today.
Cuts to a key program has left the organization in need of volunteers and donations more than ever.
The report found 80 percent of the city's food pantries and soup kitchens had increased demand over the last year.
About 60 percent also reported running out of food to make adequate meals in September.
A Food Bank spokesperson said cuts to the Food Stamp Program took away around $18 a month in benefits from one million households.
The group says Bronx residents can help fill the gaps by volunteering for eight upcoming opportunities.
Some of the opportunities include a Thanksgiving dinner prep and a food pantry distribution.
