As the state Legislature works on a proposed monitor for the East Ramapo School District, a state report is blasting the district for failures in its programs for non-English speaking students.
According to a state Education Department report, the East Ramapo School District has failed to fully meet requirements to provide bilingual programs for students.
In December of last year, the department took a closer look at the bilingual and other programs in East Ramapo, resulting in reports critical of the district.
"The East Ramapo School Board has not acted in the best interests of its public school students," says Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch. "The hardship these students have endured is reprehensible."
The reports came to light during a rally Monday night, by parents and other district residents pushing for adoption of legislation authorizing a monitor, with veto power over district decisions.
The state Education Department issued the report back in late February.
