Rep. Nita Lowey is calling on Congress to replenish the Highway Trust Fund before it expires on May 31.

The fund covers repairs for roads, bridges and mass transit, but is nearly drained of money. Officials in the Hudson Valley are worried that once expired, there will be no long-term plan on the table to fix crumbling infrastructure.

Lowey, the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, spoke at a news conference Monday in Dobbs Ferry, warning of what will happen if the fund is allowed to expire. She says more than 650,000 construction jobs and 6,000 construction projects nationwide could be affected.

Lowey says that if Congress enacts a long-term re-authorization of the gas tax-supported fund, those workers and projects could be protected.

Some Democratic and Republican lawmakers have gone on record proposing an increase to the gas tax, which has not been raised since 1993.

If Congress does not agree on a long-term funding plan by the end of the month, it will have to pass another short-term fix to keep the Highway Trust Fund alive.
