Rep. Nita Lowey is calling for increased awareness and new technology to improve safety at railroad crossings.

Lowey met with the Federal Railroad Administration and Metro-North officials Tuesday about how new technology could prevent another deadly incident on the tracks.

Police ticketed 20 drivers at the intersection at Roaring Brook Road in Chappaqua just this month, and on Monday a van crashed through the gate and drove away.

"I'm going to be advocating for eliminating the most dangerous crossings and developing new technologies to identify obstructions," she said.

 

A Metro-North train hit a vehicle stopped on the tracks in Valhalla in February, resulting in the deaths of an Edgemont mother in the SUV and five men on the train.
