With the Democratic primary just weeks away, Rep. Adriano Espaillat is making his case to voters as he seeks a sixth term representing New York's 13th Congressional District.
Espaillat, who has represented parts of northern Manhattan and the Bronx since 2017, says his deep ties to the district set him apart.
"I know the streets. I know the neighborhoods and buildings," he told News 12. "I know where there needs to be better public safety."
The congressman, who became the first Dominican American and first formerly undocumented immigrant elected to Congress, said one of his proudest accomplishments was helping secure in-state tuition rates for immigrant students attending CUNY. He also pointed to protections for delivery drivers and home-based day care providers.
Looking ahead, Espaillat said his priorities include immigration, affordability and bringing jobs to the district through projects like the Second Avenue Subway expansion and the Kingsbridge Armory redevelopment.
The race recently gained attention after Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Espaillat's opponent, Democratic Socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier.
When asked if he was surprised by the endorsement, Espaillat responded, "Nothing surprises me in politics. But it's his decision to make, and we all respect it."
Espaillat said his focus remains on voters and the communities he represents.
"I fought hard to get a seat at the table for the district that I represent, and I will continue to represent them in the best way that I can," Espaillat said.
News 12 requested interviews with all top-funded candidates in the race ahead of primary day.
