‘Registration Day’ event in Yonkers focuses on minority voters, 2020 census
Lawmakers were in Yonkers on Tuesday to get potential voters registered for the upcoming November election, as well as the 2020 census.
The event held at 1 Palisade Ave. was in recognition of National Voter Registration Day.
Minority communities are the most underrepresented, but could play a major factor in the 2020 election. A record 32 million Latinos are eligible to vote in the U.S. this year, but that's only half of that group's population, the lowest of any racial or ethnic group, according to the Pew Research Center.
New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins hopes to change that.
"Everybody has to be engaged and that engagement starts by exercising our civic duty to vote," she says.
Overall, about one-third of eligible voters nationwide will be non-white this year, which is up from a quarter in 2000, according to Pew.
In addition to voter registration, people also filling out the census to get as many people counted before the end of the month deadline.
