A 16-year-old was arrested Saturday after police say he intentionally set a fire in a boys’ bathroom at the Red Hook High School.
The Red Hook Police Department stated that a student told a school resource officer about a possible fire in the first-floor bathroom on Friday morning. When officers checked the bathroom, they found smoke and the fire alarm was triggered, prompting an evacuation of the school.
Additional officers responded and tried to enter the bathroom, but police say heavy black smoke prevented them from getting inside. They notified 911 of the developing conditions and the Red Hook fire department, alongside other agencies, responded and extinguished it.
Investigators with the Dutchess County fire investigation team determined the fire was started by human intervention.
Red Hook police launched a criminal investigation, leading to the teen's arrest. He is charged with felony arson and reckless endangerment.
He was arraigned and released into a parent's custody.
