Raw sewage leaking into the Hudson is raising serious health concerns in Newburgh.
City officials say the runoff is seeping into the river at the East End of Park Place, near a condominium complex and yacht club. They say the leak, caused by a faulty pipe connection, may have gone undetected since the 1920s or 30s.
Workers just found the spill during an underground check of the aging sewer system. A similar investigation led to the discovery of a sinkhole near the waterfront earlier this month.
People say it's disgusting. "I know in the past it's been toward the south side, but now being up here. This is really bad," says Nick Viviano, of Montgomery
City officials have hired an emergency contractor to fix the leak. They are asking people to stay away from the affected area until further notice.
