The town of Ramapo's controversial ward referendum and board expansion proposals were defeated Thursday.
The votes were actually cast 11 months ago, but all of the ballots were impounded because only a portion of the voters were told they did not need to be registered with the Board of Elections.
One proposal on the ballot would have expanded the town board to six members. The other would have divided the town into wards. Both proposals were defeated.
Proponents say they are not giving up and tell News 12 that they are heading back to court
Members of the group Preserve Ramapo claim that town officials unfairly gave members of the Hasidic Jewish community advance notice that voters did not have to be registered. They say the paper ballots from unregistered voters made the difference in the outcome.
Town officials deny that anyone was tipped off to give them an unfair advantage.
