Residents in a New Windsor development say they’re looking for answers after three men were injured in a mysterious incident while cleaning up from their community’s annual block party.

What neighbors described as a family-friendly gathering on Frank Street ended in chaos just before midnight Saturday.

“It was such a nice thing for the community to get together and have a good time and for it to end in such a tragedy, it’s just incredible,” said Mike Schaeffer, who works as a contractor in the development and knows one of the victims.

First responder radio transmissions from that night reported that the men were hurt after falling from the back of a pickup truck, but authorities have not confirmed that account.

Video from the scene shows residents upset — hugging and crying — as police put up yellow tape to block off the road.

Police returned to the neighborhood Monday, going door-to-door for information. They would only say three men were injured while cleaning up after the party, including one who suffered a serious head injury. Two others were treated for minor injuries and released.

“Injuries of any kind, it’s just heartbreaking,” said Jael Thoeny, of New Windsor.

People in the area say the uncertainty has been difficult.

“Being so many days later and not knowing what’s going on is just a little troubling,” said Schaeffer.

Neighbors say the block party was meant to bring people together — but instead left families shaken.

“We hope all of those injured heal — both emotionally and physically,” Thoeny said.
