The Putnam County Health Department is monitoring the blood lead levels of nearly a dozen children who consumed recalled cinnamon applesauce pouches from Wanabana, Schnucks, and Weis.
The FDA issued a recall last year due to lead contamination, which can cause lifelong effects in children, including slowed growth, learning and behavioral issues, and problems with hearing and speech.
The county is also considering old housing as another risk of lead exposure, as lead paint was banned in 1978.
