Protesters gathered at an Orangeburg plastics facility Monday to demand the company stop emitting what they say are nonstop toxic fumes.
Elizabeth Dudley, who is a member of the group Clean Air for Orangetown, says the smell at Aluf Plastics’ Glenshaw Street facility is so bad that she has to wear a face mask. Dudley says the facility emits an odor that smells like burning plastic and chemicals.
"It doesn't take a scientist to figure out when you're breathing in odors like this, it’s bad for your system,” says Dudley.
The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation says it has collected air samples in and around the facility and found no significant health threat. However, it did require the company to put in an odor control system.
Officials say Aluf Plastics installed a new ventilation system, but some say it doesn't work.
"The whole ventilation system wasn't put in right and there were still gaping holes in the side of the building emitting odors,” says Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart.
The town and the DEC has cited the company several times. The town says it does not have the authority to shut down the plant but that it is taking the company to court.
News 12 reached out to Aluf Plastics, which declined to comment at this time.
