The Yorktown Planning Board held a work session Monday night. One of the things addressed was the proposed cell phone tower.

This wasn't a typical board meeting, so there was no public comment period. Despite not being able to speak Monday night, residents still showed up to listen to the proposal.

The town says this proposal will address coverage caps, but residents say they don’t want it in their community.

The installation, planned for Granite Springs Road, aims to address gaps in cellular coverage identified in a Westchester County study.

While some acknowledge the need for improved services, many are worried about other potential impacts on health, wildlife, and the environment.

The project is being advanced by Homeland Towers, which the town says it selected the site after following legally required steps.

Homeland Towers was not available for comment.

Yorktown Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito said he heard from people who want this tower, so they’ll be able to use their cell phones and be able to call for emergency services.

Esposito adds that himself and his colleagues will listen to everyone’s concerns and work to make an informed decision when it comes time to vote.

The proposal is not yet finalized. A town board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m., where residents will have the opportunity to share their opinions.
