State Sen. David Carlucci is proposing legislation that would force companies to notify customers in 48 hours if their personal information is compromised. 

The announcement comes after it took Equifax six weeks to let 143 million people know of a computer breach, which exposed names, addresses, Social Security numbers and credit card numbers.

"Anytime there is a data breach, consumers should be notified in 48 hours," says Carlucci. "We've got to safeguard consumers. If these credit agencies want to do business in New York, these are the rules they got to play by."

Consumer Reports in Yonkers is also calling out the credit reporting agency. It wrote a letter to Equifax's CEO telling him the seven fixes the company must make to alleviate the situation.

They include credit freezes, providing more information about the breach and putting money aside to pay back those who are affected. 

A hearing on the proposed legislation will be held on Sept. 26.
