Plastic bags could soon be a thing of the past for shoppers in Pleasantville.

Local officials are proposing a ban on plastic bags in the village. The goal is to encourage people to use reusable bags in an effort to improve surroundings.

The plan calls for stores to sell reusable bags for 25 cents. Paper bags would initially cost 5 cents before doubling to 10 cents.

The proposal also requires stores to tell customers that they have to pay for them. The proposed ban excludes plastic bags used for some items including meat, fish and baked goods.

The village proposal to ban plastic bags isn't currently scheduled for a vote. The measure would go into effect within six months if it is approved.
