Powerful storm causes flooding, power outages and travel issues across New Jersey

Powerful thunderstorms tore through New Jersey Tuesday afternoon and evening causing a mess around the state.

Major flooding was reported in multiple towns. Hackensack police told News 12 that first responders had to rescue multiple people from vehicles that became stuck in flooding. No one was hurt.

Flooding was reported on various local roads, as well as on the New Jersey Turnpike, causing lane closures and detours.

A ground stop was issued at Newark Liberty International Airport due to the weather, delaying thousands of travelers.

New Jersey Transit was reporting delays into and out of New York Penn Station. The Morris and Essex Line was suspended in both directions between Summit and Dover due to weather-related wire issues.

JCP&L and PSE&G were reporting thousands of customers without power due to the wind and rain.

Tuesday’s storms are just the first round of heavy rain expected in New Jersey this week. The News 12 Storm Watch team is also tracking remnants of Hurricane Debby that are expected to impact the state later this week and into the weekend.
