George Santos, who was expelled from Congress and faces federal charges of defrauding donors to his 2022 campaign, is running for Congress again in NY-1.

He made the announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, during the State of the Union address while he was in attendance on the House floor.

In response, Rep. Nick LaLota, who currently represents NY-1, tweeted, "To raise the standard in Congress, and to hold a pathological liar who stole an election accountable, I led the charge to expel George Santos. If finishing the job requires beating him in a primary, count me in."

Santos joined Rich Barrabi on this edition of Power & Politics.

Also, New York has closed primaries – meaning those primaries are only open to members of those political parties. Independent voters are shut out of the primary process. Some say that shouldn't be.

The nonprofit group Open Primaries says New York's current system is undemocratic. The group’s senior vice president Jeremy Gruber explained why.
