Federal lawmakers are still figuring out what to do with a bill that would ban TikTok if the app's China-based-owner does not sell its stake.
The House already passed the bill after raising national security concerns.
Opponents of the ban say the app promotes free speech. However, White Plains-based social media expert Kris Ruby, CEO of Ruby Media Group, says the amount of data social media apps collect on users is alarming, especially in an election year.
"The longer you go on, the more powerful those profiles are of each American citizen. That means that you have more data collected on every single person, and with an upcoming election here, you can build a very good voter profile," Ruby says.
